Dispute between Disney/Marvel Studios and Sony, Tom Holland will take Peter Parker Role

Even if Spider-Man leaves the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of the dispute between Disney / Marvel Studios and Sony, Tom Holland will return to take on the role of Peter Parker. Last weekend at the Keystone Comic-Con in Philadelphia, the Spider-Man actor confirmed that there is probably one more Spidey movie with him in the lead, according to GameSpot sister site ComicBook.

Holland even pointed out that the creative team has already thrown a third Spider-Man movie. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are coming back for the third film, and they apparently take an out-of-the-box approach to their concept for that.

"We sat down with some of our creatives. We set up Spider-Man 3, which will be something very special, something very different," said Holland.

It is currently unknown whether director Jon Watts will return for the third film. It was recently reported that Marvel is now trying to hire Watts for another film because he has not yet been signed for additional Spider-Man films. Holland also talked about his future as Spider-Man, and in the past he referred to Marvel with Sony as his future.

"I'm just so grateful that Marvel changed my life and allowed my dreams to come true and Sony allowing me to continue living my dream," he said. "It's a crazy week and it's never been done before so we'll see how it goes and it'll be as amazing and as fun."

The Netherlands was not clear how the next film will be, but we can perhaps gain insight into MCU boss Kevin Feige. Months before the split he said in an interview with CinemaBlend that in the future Spider-Man wants to be less in the shadow of the larger MCU.

"So in terms of your question about going forward, it'll be fun to see Spidey back in his element, out of the shadow of Tony, out of the shadow of the other Avengers, as his own man now, as his own hero," Feige said. "And yet now facing his own challenges that aren't coming from Avengers fighting, like Civil War, or aliens coming, like Infinity War or Endgame. It's all Peter focused and Peter based."

It sounds like a more traditional Peter-focused solo film was planned before the split, and that approach would still make sense in a post-MCU Spidey world.

Last week there was news that Disney and Marvel could not reach an agreement on the future of Spider-Man movies. Sony owns the film rights for Spider-Man. Years ago, Sony and Disney agreed to admit Spider-Man to the MCU, starting with Captain America: Civil War. That deal was never expected to last forever, and now it seems to end. A recent report suggested that Feige would no longer be involved in the production of Spider-Man movies such as Disney / Marvel and Sony could not agree to the terms. According to many, the end result is that Spider-Man will not be part of the MCU in the future, although this has not been explicitly confirmed. (It is also possible that Sony and Disney can still agree to a new deal.)

Sony has a history of producing its own Spider-Man films, because the company made the original Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire and later the Amazing Spider-Man franchise with Andrew Garfield. Recently it produced Venom, which was completely separate from the MCU.

In July, Kevin Feige, boss of Marvel Studios, explained how the next Spider-Man movie "should do something completely different" due to the events of Far From Home. When you've seen the movie, you know what he's talking about.

It is no surprise that Sony wants to make more Spider-Man films with the Netherlands, because Homecoming and Far From Home were hugely successful at the register. Homecoming earned $ 880 million at the checkout, with Far From Home earning $ 1.11 billion to surpass Skyfall ($ 1,108 billion) as Sony's most profitable film ever.

Even if Spider-Man leaves the MCU, Disney continues to benefit from the character because it receives 100% of the money from Spider-Man merchandise. (Disney paid Sony a reported one-time fee of $ 175 million for the Spider-Man merchandise, in addition to an annual royalty fee of about $ 30 million.)

In addition to Spider-Man, Sony is investing in the Netherlands with the Uncharted film in which the Netherlands plays a younger Nathan Drake. The film recently lost director Dan Trachtenberg, but the Netherlands is still on board and the film wants to start photographing at the beginning of 2020.
