Eagles vs. Jets: Preview, predictions

Costello's call

The Jets believed most of the week that Sam Darnold would return for this game. Without him, this is a game that feels impossible for them to win. I think the attack will play better than recently, but the Eagles score on the Jets.

Jets safety Jamal Adams vs. Eagles tight end Zach Ertz

Despite the battle of the Jets, Adams has been a bright spot. The safety of the third year has started the season strongly. Pro Football Focus has rated him the number 8 safety in football, and he had a pick-six against the Patriots two weeks ago.

Adams is clearly frustrated with all the loss and he said he escaped to Turks and Caicos during the week to clear his head. Now the challenge returns to face one of the best tight ends in Ertz. The Eagles star has not yet scored a touchdown this year, but is leading the team with 24 catches and 255 receiving yards.

“I’m a competitor,” Adams said. “I’m looking forward to going against anybody I go against but this is definitely a great tight end. He’s really a receiver. My hat goes off to him. I have a lot of respect for what he does. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Four downs

Looking at Wentz: The Eagles win a huge win over the Packers at Lambeau Field, and they were led by quarterback Carson Wentz in that win. The Jets realize how much of a challenge they face this week (88-for-145, 963 yards, nine TDs, two INTs) and talked glowingly about him.

"Well, for me, his ability to expand the game is harmful at all levels, because that makes those guys fall on the field," said coach Adam Gase. "His arm is phenomenal. You have a man with an explosive arm. He can push the ball over the field, he can make all throws. He's a big man and it's hard to knock down. ... He can do so many things with RPOs and how intelligent he is and how competitive he is. You can see it. This guy, he's feisty and wants to win. The toughness is there. He takes a few shots and bounces straight up again. "

The Jets defence played well after giving up scores on the first three discs in New England. They can't start this week so slowly.

Ring the Bell: the Jets tend to run back Le'Veon Bell fast in the first three weeks, even though he didn't have much room to run. He has played 96 per cent of the offensive snaps, but only 2.9 yards per carrying on average.

Despite the struggles, Bell has taken a positive attitude.

“He’s not a complainer,” Gase said. “He’s always, ‘Hey, what do I need to do different? How can I help?’ He’s always looking for the solution. He’s been awesome in that aspect of just trying to help, like how do we get positive plays? How do we stay ahead of the sticks? How do we get third-and-manageable? How do we stay first down, second down, first down? He’s been outstanding as far as just trying to find the solution.”
"He is not a complainer," said Gase. "Hey, always," Hey, what else should I do? How can I help? "He is always looking for the solution. He is great in that respect or just trying to help, such as how do we get positive actions? How do we stay ahead? How do we become third and manageable? How do we stay down first, down, first down? He has been excellent in his attempt to find only the solution. "

Standing in line: it was clear what was the only area that, according to the Jets, needed the most improvement. Gase said they would look for changes in the attack line and it is expected that they will have new starters this week.

Left guard Kelechi Osemele missed the practice time with shoulder and knee issues, but he may have been in the bench anyway. Expect Alex Lewis to start in his place. Lewis was taken over this summer in an exchange with the Ravens. Another position to look at is the right tackle, with rookie Chuma Edoga getting the call instead of Brandon Shell. Edoga impressed the coaches in the preseason.

Take a pass: This is a matchup of the worst passing attack in the NFL (Jets averaging 131 yards) and the worst passing defence in the NFL (Eagles averaging 324 yards allowed). Something must give. The Jets can be started without quarterback Sam Darnold, but the Secondary of the Eagles is also very confused. They miss cornerbacks Ronald Darby and Avonte Maddox. Sidney Jones has a hamstring injury but is expected to play. They signed Orlando Scandrick this week and Craig James played three snaps in two games.

It is a weakness versus weakness struggle that could be an important factor in the game.

“I’m super anxious to get out there, but right now, I have to control those emotions and really just let the doctors tell me what I have to do."

I’m told Sidney Jones hamstring is not as bad as Ronald Darby’s There’s hope Sidney could play vs Jets

Ronald Darby could miss Jets game but hopefully back for Vikings game There’s hope DeSean Jackson can be back vs Jets

Sidney Jones' status will be the key injury to monitor this week. Without Jones, Eagles' starting cornerbacks will be Rasul Douglas, Craig James, Orlando Scandrick on Sunday vs. Jets. They'd need to decide whether to promote D.J. White or Ryan Lewis or go with a safety as CB4.

How bad is the Jets offense? Only 1 TD in their first 3 games for the first time in team history Their defense is outscoring their offense: 22 to 11 Eagles 14 point favorites vs 3rd string QB Luke Falk
